Loree Shrager, Ph.D., Psychologist

Loree-Shrager,-Ph.D.,-Post-Doctoral-ResidentDr. Shrager is a Psychologist at the Miami Counseling and Resource Center, having received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Nova Southeastern University in 2003. She views life’s’ challenges and complexities as necessary and incredible opportunities for growth, and believes that psychotherapy, the exploration of one’s life and mind with open, curious and careful attention, leads to the discovery of new perspectives.

Dr. Shrager has studied the art and science of mind-body medicine through her involvement with yoga over the past 25 years, and she completed her doctoral dissertation on the subject of anxiety and the physical symptoms of stress as they relate to yoga, meditation and aerobic activity. A blending of Eastern mindfulness based approaches and Western cognitive psychology is at the core of her philosophy. Mindfulness is a strategy of living life more fully, by learning to pay careful non-judgmental attention to the present moment.  This technique seamlessly overlaps with cognitive theories that invite one to more closely attend to and explore specific moment to moment thoughts which accompany feelings, decisions and actions.  With this philosophy in mind, her therapeutic approach is to compassionately, openly, and fully listen as she accompanies an individual on the journey of exploration and change.

Dr. Shrager’s extensive study and understanding of mind-body practices has lead to a focus on the treatment of anxiety, depression and eating disorders. She often utilizes evidence based mind-body techniques including the use of breathing exercises, meditation, and guided relaxation. A particular interest as well, is in helping with marital, relationship and family issues. She offers guidance and support to couples and families, whether they are working on restoring harmony in their fractured relationships or navigating through the challenging process of divorce.   Dr. Shrager specializes in Mindfulness Based Eating, a philosophy and technique that uncovers a radically new way of approaching food and eating for individuals who struggle with anorexia, bulimia, or binge-eating disorder. It is a non-diet based approach that emphasizes enjoyment and attentiveness, and ends the painful struggle with food, transforming eating into a source of enjoyment and well being. In addition she offers and has extensive experience in educational, gifted and IQ testing.
