Behavior and Social/Emotional Problems

All children and adolescents go through periods of behavioral adjustment and development. These changes sometimes can cause significant problems. Children can begin to develop certain patterns of behavior that begin to affect their academic work, family and peer relations, mood, motivation, and self-concept. It is important to intervene to determine the cause of these behaviors in order thwart the development of enduring psychological and social difficulties. Many of the common causes of behavioral problems include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety – separation, social, or generalized
  • Anger
  • Low self-esteem
  • Poor social skills
  • ADHD or learning disabilities
  • Divorce or separation
  • School problems (e.g., poor grades, bullies)
  • Drugs or alcohol

A comprehensive evaluation by one of our doctors will help identify the causes of the behavioral problems in order to address the problem through various interventions including:

  • Behavioral modification and management
  • Educational strategies
  • Individual and family counseling
  • Self-esteem growth
  • Medication
