Susan Scholz-Rubin, Ph.D., Psychologist – Founding Director

Dr. Susan Scholz-Rubin has been in private practice for 35 years and is the founding-director of Miami Counseling and Resource Center and also of two of its subdivisions, the Women’s Resource and Counseling Center and the Divorce and Family Counseling Center.During those 35 years she has gained experience in working with a wide range of issues presented by her patients. Central to her expertise with many of these issues is her compassion and her ability to truly listen coupled with her passionate belief that we humans are capable of change when we truly wish to change and when we are willing, with proper guidance, to do the difficult and exciting work involved. As a result of her many years as a psychologist, Dr. Susan Scholz-Rubin has concluded that relationships are both our greatest gifts and our most intense challenges. These relationships, of all kinds, include couples (straight or gay, married or unmarried), parent-child, sibling, friendships and colleagues. She helps clients (individuals, couples, and families) resolve their relationship difficulties by developing a deeper understanding of their own childhood issues, by identifying and breaking self-destructive patterns, by teaching conflict resolution and assertiveness techniques, and by developing a deep sense of self-love and self-esteem. All of these insights and changes allow for a greater acceptance of self and others and an openness to fully engage in relationships. When working with couples, Dr. Scholz-Rubin’s preference is for them to maintain rather than discard their committed relationships. That decision necessitates hard work, letting go of defensiveness and resentment, and a willingness to listen to the needs and requests of each other. Committed relationships and families are worth saving.

Marital infidelity often provides the greatest challenge and many couples are successful at rebuilding their shattered dreams or creating new ones. Regaining trust requires a huge commitment from each person and Dr. Schulz-Rubin walks the difficult road with her frightened, angry and oftentimes confused clients. Sometimes marital hopes end in separation or divorce, and a state of tragic tension often develops. In 1992, Dr. Scholz-Rubin opened the Divorce and Family Counseling Center where individuals and couples explore either rebuilding their relationships or giving serious consideration to ending them. The cost of divorce is both emotional and financial, deeply touching all members of the family; therefore, Dr. Scholz-Rubin assists divorcing couples in open and cooperative communication and helps them with the many decisions they will need to make to live separate lives. In 1982, she became a Divorce and Family Mediator.

Dr. Susan Scholz-Rubin also serves as a Parenting Coordinator for the 11th Circuit Court, Family Division. Parenting Coordinators work with divorcing or post-divorce families to facilitate the resolution of disputes between parents and to protect the children from the damage resulting from prolonged and intense levels of animosity. She develops comprehensive Parenting Plans to ensure that the children and each parent are able to have a close and continuing relationship with one another. Working with non-traditional step-parent and blended families is another of her specialties.

The loss of the family resulting from divorce is exceptionally difficult for most parents and especially for their children, and Dr. Susan Scholz-Rubin works with all members of the family in an attempt to minimize the psychological/emotional damage. She consults with the parents at each stage of the process. She offers advice about how to tell the children about the decision to divorce, counsels the parents through the actual separation, helps them move through the challenging divorce process, and assists them in working through the many unanticipated effects of the divorce aftermath. At every stage, the needs and effects on the children are kept at the forefront.

Dr. Scholz-Rubin’s long and satisfying practice reflects her commitment and dedication to a profession where she knows she can be instrumental in making a difference in the quality of life of those who seek her services.
